Carved Porcelain Forms

Process-Carved Porcelain Apprenticeship

Paint slip on the wheel
Draw lines with dental pick
Carve away negative space
This is a simplified outline of the process I learned while studying with master carver Leslie Thompson. I met her at the Baltimore Craft Council show and was invited to come spend a week with her in her beautiful Southern California home. We slipped, carved and fired pots. See above for finished work.

Improvisational Patchwork Workshop

denyse schmidt dana bechert improvisational patchwork

This is a workshop offered by Denyse Schmidt, a quilter out of Bridgeport who I am interning with this summer. To create the quilting squares we had to select a piece from the above pictured bags at random and attach it where it fit best on your working square. The third image from the top is everyone's squares displayed together. The top two are squares using some of my fabric and some of hers. Add Image

Right Red Weaving

Here's the final product of my "right red" research and work. I kept a blog daily for a month of when I encountered or thought about this specific cadmium medium red. I am drawn to the way it lifts above other colors around it. The weaving is about 6 feet long and 2 1/2 feed wide. There is a hand painted ikat pattern on the warp. The yarns are all hand dyed or found and recycled. The chunkier white in the weaving is hand spun. To finish the ends I braided merino wool and then felted shapes.

Static Patterns

Face and Hair Patches

My friend James screen-printed these faces for his little brother's 4th grade class in Virginia. The kids drew the pictures of themselves. I cut out and sewed them as patches!
